In its sixth season, the popular reality TV show The Voice Australia saw international voices battle it out in search of Australia’s best voice. Amongst the talented finalists was Ruva, a proud member of the Zimbabwean community who was born in Australia.

Ruva told FOAA in a follow-up interview how she’s always loved singing and performing since childhood.

“As a child it was more of a fun party trick, but as I got older I really started working on my craft and decided to take it seriously.”

The talented songbird works in musical theatre 8 shows a week, and on her downtime she’s writing more music! She believes singing is life, making us aware that this is not just a random hobby.

Ruva credits her experience when studying at the Victorian College of the Arts secondary school as a real turning point in her career choice. She expressed that after being accepted into this elite arts school for gifted young musicians, this was a huge initial achievement in itself. While studying there, she was the recipient of the Young Leaders Jazz Award and was given the opportunity to perform at the International Women’s Jazz Festival at the renowned Bennetts Lane and Federation Square in Melbourne. On top of that, Ruva also feels lucky to have worked professionally in the musical theatre world, with her debut show being The Lion King. She followed this show with We Will Rock You and Dusty, which enjoyed a national tour.

In her most recent achievement, which sealed her spot on the map and in our hearts, Ruva shares that The Voice Australia was such a fun experience where she had an amazing time working with the team. Admittedly, it was also such a surreal challenge which she will never forget.

“It reminded me how much I want this!” – Ruva on The Voice Australia

On her mentor Seal, Ruva says he is great. Very calm and knows his stuff, although she wishes she got more time with him. FOAA is in admiration of Ruva thus far, and we are excited to see younger, talented Africans represent our community at such a massive scale.
